Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Jonathan, like most early JoJos, is incredibly stong and imposing, at least physically. He stands at 195 cm, or about 6'5", and weighs 105 kg, or about 231 lbs. A conventional BMI calculator says this means he's slightly overweight for his build, but considering he's incredibly athletic and toned, it's safe to say that most of that amounts to dense muscle mass. He has a thick neck and broad shoulders, with particularly defined back muscles. His hips are narrower, but not as narrow as Joseph's or Jotaro's: his torso is V-shaped, but he's much bulkier in general. To combat this he has an ass that won't quit and thick, muscular thighs and calves. He's also got pretty big hands! In terms of his body type, he leans more towards...endomorphic, I suppose? He's beefy and his muscle settles densely in certain areas of his body, particularly his pectorals. Google "rugby player body" and you'll see what I mean. Notice how some of the players there have abs that aren't as defined as a conventional athlete or a bodybuilder, but you can still absolutely tell that they're there? That's Jonathan. Or just picture Chris Evans' shirtless scene in the first Captain America movie. That's also pretty representative of his body type. I'll leave you to that. ② How old is he? Jonathan is 20 years old! ③ Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well, or does he slouch? He's a nobleman! He's been groomed to have stick-straight posture, though he'll relax a little if he's around family or someone he's close to. ④ How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? By Victorian standards, he's in tip-top shape! The Ripple ejects harmful substances from his body, heals wounds and infections, and is generally a pretty effective panacea, so he's generally pretty healthy. However, he doesn't have any vaccine-based immunity to disease, since they haven't been invented yet from his perspective. One glance at him and you can tell he's athletic - this is from a combination of childhood boxing, years of playing Rugby, and general vigorous exercise. ⑤ How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? In a fight, Jonathan is deliberate, using every part of his body to his advantage. He's a tactile kind of person in general and expresses himself a great deal through touch. While he has his moments of grace and is able to perform impressive tactical feats in combat, he sometimes forgets his own height when he's focused on something else - he slams his head into a metal doorway on his honeymoon because he's looking back at his wife. ⑥ How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror? He's pretty good looking! I'd say he's around an 8. He doesn't think of himself as unattractive, but he's pretty modest about his appearance. ⑦ Describe his complexion: dark, light, clear, scarred? Jonathan has a nice tan, but he still has a fairly light complexion. He has some parts of his skin that are pretty calloused and rough, like his palms and his fingers, but for the most part it's smooth - except for his scars. He doesn't actually have that many, though! He's got a long, thick one extending out from the base of his left shoulder where he got stabbed with a massive spear, a couple of faint burn scars if you look really close on his forearms, and if he's coming in post death, he may have oddly circular scars on his palms, the back of his hands, and both sides of his neck. ⑧ Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Depending on the medium, Jonathan's hair runs from blue to brown to black - but I play him with icons from the anime, so it's blue! It's fairly thick, tousled in the front and parted at the center, and goes down a little past his neck. In true shounen fashion, it's also spiky. He's also got notably thick, arched eyebrows that are darker than the hair on his head. ⑨ What color are his eyes? They're a really nice blue! They have a little more green than his hair, so in some cases they look closer to teal. ⑩ Does the character have any other noteworthy features? He has a birthmark shaped like a five-pointed star on the back of his left shoulder. It is passed down through his family line, and is one of the main things that identifies him as a Joestar. ⑪ What are his chief tension centers? He definitely carries a lot of tension in his back and around his shoulders. Someone give him a massage. ⑫ What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? Oh good god, I have to explain JoJo's fashion. If we go by what he canonically wears, it's actually fairly tame, but if we count stuff from chapter covers, then shit gets weird quick. "Weird" ranges from ornate hats to whatever this is to entirely too many union jacks to be on one person's body. In the actual manga chapters, he tends to wear sweatervests and dress pants for casual situations, a suit with tails for formal occasions, and generally something that allows for a lot of movement when he's fighting. He'll pair a bow tie with just about all of these options, usually a red one. He also has a tweed coat and a deerstalker cap for when he's going out in cold weather and wants to communicate the fact that he's a complete and utter dork. ⑬ Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? Surprisingly well, actually, considering he's so big! Some of his garments are a little tight, but that's probably personal preference more than anything else. He probably has to have them custom-made, but that isn't that unusual for the time period. If he ever gets into a game with something resemble modern department stores, he's probably going to have to get at least an XL. ⑭ Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? Well, he doesn't have an actual job because his family is wealthy and esteemed, but he does dress a little differently when he knows he's going to be fighting! Like I mentioned above, he goes for things he can move freely in but don't prove distracting in combat, like a loose crop top and tight pants. ⑮ You knew it was coming: what kind of underwear does he wear, if any? Christ. So Victorian men's underwear is kind of ridiculous, don't say I didn't warn you. It's made of flannel and it's supposed to be fairly tight-fitting. >> top SPEECH ① What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? Jonathan's voice is deep, but not to the extent of being husky. When he's in a lower, quieter register, he speaks smoothly and conveys more of his gentle, refined nature. It pitches up slightly when he's yelling or excited about something and gets a touch of roughness to it, like he's this close to yelling himself hoarse. ② How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? In ordinary situations his volume is pretty standard - maybe a little loud, but not disruptive. He does absolutely have some pipes on him, though, and when he yells he's loud enough to be intimidating. When he's nervous or surprised, he'll occasionally stutter at the beginning of his sentences, and when he's contemplative or conflicted about something, he'll pause between sequential thoughts. ③ Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? He's got a "standard" British accent, all things considered, but outside of that he doesn't really have any quirks of speech worth noting. ④ What language(s) does he speak and with how much fluency? Good question! I'm still in the process of researching Victorian education and what languages he could potentially have learned, but I'm going to say he's fluent in English and Latin but knows enough French to get by. ⑤ Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? Not really! ⑥ Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? He's a pretty thoughtful guy, but he's also really good at thinking on his feet in general, so he's able to talk in most casual situations without deliberating too much. He'd also be a damn good inspirational speaker, but maybe that's just me. ⑦ Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? For the most part he's articulate, with an eloquent and refined manner of speaking, but when he's caught off guard he'll stutter a little and be reduced to shorter sentences. Sometimes he'll take up a narrator sort of role and explain what just happened, but that's mostly Speedwagon's job. >> top EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL ① How intelligent is this character?
